Skateistan began as a grassroots Sport for Development project on the streets of Kabul in 2007, and is now an award-winning, international NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) with projects in Afghanistan, Cambodia and South Africa. Skateistan is the first international development initiative to combine skateboarding with educational outcomes. Skateistan is non-political, independent, and inclusive of all ethnicities, religions and social backgrounds. The book about the organization Skateistan – The Tale of Skateboarding in Afghanistan was published in 2013.
Skateistan – The Tale of Skateboarding in Afghanistan shares the strange and beautiful intersection of traditional Afghan society and a new generation of Afghan skateboarders and artists. Through a balanced mix of words and photographs, the book pieces together the tale of grassroots NGO Skateistan, which since 2009 has brought skateboarding, creative arts, and new education opportunities to girls and boys in Kabul, Afghanistan. The NGO has been able to replicate its unique project model in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan. ‚Skateistan‘ gives a rare, in-depth look into the lives of exceptional young Afghans facing incredible challenges and giving new life to a city that has been ravaged by war.
